Wondering How to Deal With a Breakup? Meet The Breakup Expert

How to Deal With a Breakup, A Q&A Interview and Featured Article With The Breakup Expert Kate Galt

Everyone has that one friend. You know her—she’s the person you can always call, email or text for meaningful advice when you’re going through a breakup. For as long as Kate Galt can remember, she has been that person. After working as a business coach for several years, Kate couldn’t stop thinking about her lifelong passion for helping people navigate relationships. So she became a Coach Training Institute-certified relationship coach, and now provides relationship counseling and advice to individuals and couples through online coaching and therapy. As The Breakup Expert, Kate works with people during times of transition to provide clarity about how to move forward, before, during and after a breakup. The Mind Body Spirit Network sat down with Kate to learn more about how her holistic relationship  coaching approach helps her clients achieve greater happiness and abundance in relationships and life.

Q: So, Kate, you are The Breakup Expert. Can you tell us what that entails?

A: I help people when they are in relationship pain and can’t quite understand the next step, or how to deal with a breakup or imminently ending relationship. They know they need to make a major transformation, whether they’re in or out of the relationship, but they don’t know what to do, so first step would be to get some expert relationship advice.

Q: Does everyone you coach end up breaking up, or do you provide relationship counseling to help couples reconcile their relationships, too?

A: I call myself The Breakup Expert because we need to address our relationships on a conscious level. I want people to be in happy relationships. A lot of times irreparable damage has been done. I can help someone see whether that’s true or not, and I can also help them with how to deal with a breakup. More times than not, that is what needs to happen in order to break through to a healthy relationship.

Q: When would someone need relationship counseling or advice from The Breakup Expert?

A: When they want relationship counseling for ending a relationship, deciding whether to stay or go, or mending a broken heart or just getting help with how to get over a breakup. You’d want my expertise when:

  1. You’re only partly committed to a relationship you’ve been in for over a year, and you don’t know if it’s going to bring you long-term happiness. You need to make a decision so you’re not on the fence, exhausted and confused.
  2. You were dumped more than three months ago and find it difficult to get over this one. You keep relaying everything that happened, wonder where you went wrong, and need advice on how to get over a breakup so you can be happy and find love again.
  3. You’ve found yourself in relationships where you aren’t getting the results you desire and you wonder if it will ever happen for you. You need to uncover the blind spots so you can stop that pattern and start a new chapter where you succeed.
  4. You can’t find the resources you need to move on from your current relationship—money, courage, support. You haven’t made any movement toward a breakup even though you know it’s over. You need emotional and logistical support to get into action. This is where a relationship coach can really get you moving in the right direction.
  5. You initiated the breakup but can’t live without regret. You wonder if you made a big mistake. I can help you build a life where you don’t wonder anymore.

Q: How does your work differ from that of a traditional couples or relationship counselor?

A: I am coach-trained as well as offering therapy. Many people have had success giving relationship advice and then they call themselves an expert, whether they have training or not. But, I’m trained in relationship coaching, and it’s an art that takes lots of courage and practice. To really make an impact on a person and help them change, I’m going to tell someone their strengths and their weaknesses, and that’s not easy to hear. Therapy is a part of coaching that allows the person to empty out the baggage, the constraints and the limiting beliefs that have held them back. [ Relationship ] Coaching is that forward movement of “what do you envision, and what can we do to make you happy, peaceful and living with joy?” My clients look to the past and the future to experience healing in both places. Therapy is the past, coaching is the future.

Q: What online therapy and relationship counseling services do you offer as The Breakup Expert?

A: Online therapy is up-and-coming. Some clients are hesitant to talk about such intimate subjects without being face-to-face. But when they decide to try meeting on the phone or via Skype, they love it. It’s a great way for them to be in a quiet place where they feel like they have that anonymity, and I’m just provoking a little bit of thought, furthering the action, deepening the learning, and helping them get to a place where they feel stronger, more courageous, and better about themselves and what they’re going to do next. If you are in real need of support in how to deal with a breakup, I also offer emergency text sessions. It’s 20 minutes of texting back and forth for someone who is in emotional crisis mode. I make it very clear, if you’re in physical danger, you would call the domestic violence hotline. I never had a therapist who I could text and usually get breakup advice right away. I give clients a little relief so they can re-wire. It’s satisfying for both of us.

Relationship advice for men.

Q: Do you provide relationship advice for men, women, individuals, couples, or everyone?

A: I do work with couples. In fact, one of the first Breakup Expert clients was a couple where the man was ending the relationship and he hired me to help them break up together. I work with men and women, transgender, gay couples. It doesn’t matter. Emotions are human and we’ve all got a lot of work to do, especially with relationships.

Q: What qualifies you to be The Breakup Expert?

A: For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in relationships. When my friends chose someone that I thought was a loser, if that person broke their heart, I took it personally. I want people to know their worth and to be in relationships that bring out the best in them. We don’t know how to do that because we don’t have good role models. When people would ignore red flags and when I would ignore red flags, it drove me crazy, like why can’t we get out of this? I found that relationships can be an addiction, whether they’re healthy or unhealthy, and it’s how we navigate through that addiction that makes it a success or not. I made mistakes. I picked the wrong boyfriends for many years. Now I have a successful marriage that is a role model for me every day. I learn from it and I can take it to my clients and say this is what you want! This is how you want to be treated! I’ve also been educated in the self-care realm—yoga, nutritional counseling, herbal supplements and exercise. I bring this education to my clients as they come out of crisis mode and into regeneration. From there, they move forward. They heal their relationships and themselves.

Q: How about your credentials?

A: I’m a CTI-certified coach, which took two years of school on top of my bachelor of science in marketing, management and leadership. I know how to help people process their emotions, and that’s a therapeutic route, but I’m not a therapist. A lot of therapists are becoming coaches. The CEO of Google has said everyone should have a coach. A coach holds your hand through the tough times, helps you get out of your own perspective and limiting beliefs, and is that little pitchfork to help you strive for more than you thought you could.

Q: Can you share an example of a positive result you’ve seen from a client?

A: This client hired me for the “Should I stay or should I go” intensive. It was four weeks where she was emailing me as she processed whether she should stay or go. She let herself be completely committed to the question and to having an answer after that month. She was honest with herself and it was beautiful to coach her into going deeper to figure out the answer. She ended up staying, but I coached her on making sure that five specific things were happening while she stayed in this relationship. For people who are always in limbo, it’s exhausting, but for her, she said, “I’m going to stay, and this is exactly what I need. If I don’t get these things, then I’m going to move on, and this is what I’m going to give.” They’re still together after a couple years.

Q: What do you want to say that you accomplished at the end of your life?

A: On my deathbed, I want to be proud that I helped other people and myself go deep into all the possibilities and practicalities that lie ahead for them—their purpose in life, what they want to change in themselves, how much happiness is possible for them, what they need to do to heal, and what’s holding them back. When we have the courage to take that leap, cut our losses, go into the neutral zone after a change and get to know who we are and what we want, we rise above what we think is possible, pay attention to our personal relationships and laugh at our shortcomings (that would be the number one thing to save in a relationship, by the way, is a sense of humor). That’s when we open the door to immense healing for the entire world, and it starts with one household at a time.
